My new favorite person in the bible is Joshua. He is so encouraging, and he is so strong. He is powerful, but not by his own strength. He relies totally and whole heartedly on God and on what God has going for him. Read the book of Joshua. Not only is he the man, but he doesn’t know it.
He doesn’t know that he is the man.
He knows that God has him in the palm of his hand, and that all courage and strength can and will be displayed through his life. He is a POWERFUL man. He is a POWERFUL follower of God. He is a Rock Star of epic proportions.
Really quick set-up of him. Joshua chapter 1 begins with the death of Joshua’s longtime friend and mentor Moses. He loved Moses and served in might ways under this great leader. Joshua has pain in his life because of the death of his friend, but he knows that God will be there for him because he also knows that he is about to go into battle. He gathers the troops and says:
“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”
So, the book happens, they take the land, adn it comes down to Josh’s time to retire. He is old, haggard and beat out of his mind. So, what does he do? He calls the leaders together and says:
“Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now.”
Joshua, who is on the road to death, says again “Be very STRONG.” Why?
Why do we need to be strong?
Strong to stand up to temptation.
Strong to withstand trials of many kinds.
Strong to lead our families.
Strong for the good of the church you serve.
Strong for your family.
Strong for your wife.
Strong when you speak up for God.
Strength.
Boldness.
Honor and glorify your God by being strong.
Know that he has you in the palm of your hand. Know that he loves you. Know that HE CARES ABOUT YOU.
